Hosting a prestigious event like the Golden Globes surely isn’t an easy gig, and that became apparent when comedian Jo Koy faced scrutiny for his performance. He took the stage at the Golden Globes and got a critical gaze from the show business world after making some dull jokes, including one pointed at Taylor Swift and her boyfriend.
A Bad Taylor Swift Joke
The decision to hire Koy was probably made relatively late because it was announced at the last moment. Reviews of Koy’s performance varied, with some describing some of his jokes as rather bad and others calling his opening monologue a horrid, sophomoric mishmash of lazy jokes.
Koy himself was having a hard time, so much so that he even addressed it after a moment where a joke about Barbie fell very flat. He emphasized the tight timeline in which he had to prepare and acknowledged that while he had a role in crafting some of the material, some of the jokes were prepared for him.
Koy Had a Tough Time
Despite having a few bad moments, Koy ventured into risky territory with a joke about Taylor Swift and her boyfriend, Travis Kelce. He referenced the Golden Globes’ fewer camera shots of Taylor Swift compared to when she was attending an NFL double-header with her boyfriend. It prompted a live cut to the singer. Swift simply took a sip of her drink and stared. That then led Koy to offer a quick apology.
The aftermath of that joke was a swift and fierce response from Swift’s devoted fan base, the Swifties. Social media became a battleground where fans criticized Koy for his joke, with some predicting he would fade into obscurity. While it is probably not a big deal for Koy, he certainly found out that displeasing the powerful and passionate fanbase of Taylor Swift has some social media consequences.
