In January, over 1,000 fans attended a special concert hosted by SiriusXM to celebrate Green Day’s new album, Saviors, in New York City. The show started with Billie Joe Armstrong telling fans to enjoy the moment and put away their phones, and he also made a dig at Elon Musk. That was just the beginning.
A Response to Elon Musk
Elon Musk criticized Green Day on New Year’s Day for adding a subtle reference to the lyrics of “American Idiot.” Anyone who was at the show, though, would have known that it was nonsense. Green Day, in its nearly 40 years, has always had “righteous rage” and commented on the problems with the system. It’s hard to deny that with songs with names like “The American Dream Is Killing Me”.
This is why Green Day fans gathered in New York for the performance, enduring hours in the cold outside as they eagerly awaited the opening of the doors. It was all worth it when the band came on stage, immediately playing their hit “American Idiot”.
Green Day’s Dynamic Performance
Following that, they presented a brief set of songs from Saviors. Playing new songs usually doesn’t go over well in stadiums, but the songs went over well in the club setting in New York. After the songs they revisited old albums, like Dookie and American Idiot, playing hits like “Burnout,” “Boulevard of Broken Dreams,” and “Holiday,” much to the delight of fans.
They wrapped up the show with a “shuffle” of songs from their catalog, which was exciting because fans never knew which song was coming next. At the end of playing “Whatshername”, Armstrong commented on how much they love their fans and that he wished the best for all of them. They didn’t play any encore songs, but fans left satisfied regardless, having witnessed a historical show by a ’90s band who refuses to give up.
